Activity Regulation ACTIVITY REGULATION: Binding to alpha subunit is required for catalytic activity. {ECO:0000250|UniProtKB:P10507}.
Binding Site
Calcium Binding
catalytic Activity CATALYTIC ACTIVITY: Reaction=Release of N-terminal transit peptides from precursor proteins imported into the mitochondrion, typically with Arg in position P2.; EC=3.4.24.64; Evidence={ECO:0000250|UniProtKB:P10507};
DNA Binding
EC Number 3.4.24.64
Enzyme Function FUNCTION: Catalytic subunit of the essential mitochondrial processing protease (MPP), which cleaves the mitochondrial sequence off newly imported precursors proteins (Probable). Preferentially, cleaves after an arginine at position P2 (By similarity). Plays an essential role in mitochondrial biogenesis (PubMed:18603769). {ECO:0000250|UniProtKB:Q03346, ECO:0000269|PubMed:18603769, ECO:0000305|PubMed:18603769}.

Interact With
Induction INDUCTION: Antisense RNA inhibition of the mppB gene induces gene expression of nuclear-encoded mitochondrial proteins (mppA and cxdA) and surprisingly also of the mppB gene itself. These results suggest that antisense RNA inhibition of mppB induces gene expression of mitochondrial proteins, presumably in a retrograde signaling manner. Up-regulated by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, PAO1 strain and PA14 strain infection. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:18590548, ECO:0000269|PubMed:18603769}.
Subcellular Location SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Mitochondrion inner membrane {ECO:0000269|PubMed:18603769}. Mitochondrion matrix {ECO:0000269|PubMed:18603769}.
